Term Paper Footnotes
the term paper. Footnotes guide readers to put the topic on their minds, to be able to feel what the writer is telling about the topic. The common example of this is when you read a story in a book, you are trying to complete the plot and capture the scene in your imagination. Now, there are cases when additional information will be inserted to the main idea of the page. But sometimes, it is not appropriate to divert the attention of the reader towards this new idea. In such a case, a marker will be provided on any part of the page. This marker will then point out to the footnote so that the reader can read it later on.
What is a footnote? A footnote is a notation at the bottom of the page in a printed document, essays and term papers. Footnotesare usually presented in smaller print than the dominant text, and they are used for a variety of purposes. The foot in footnote refers to the fact that the notation is located in the footer or bottom of the document.
Term paper footnotes are most often used as an alternative to long explanatory notes that can be distracting to readers. Most literary style guidelines including the MLA and APA recommend limited use of footnotes. However, writers often encourage note references. Aside from use as a bibliographic element, footnotes are used for additional information or explanatory notes that might be too digressive for the main text. Most of term paper foot notes is mark by an asterisk, number or a small letter x. If you will check out some research paper online, you will also see some of these footnote markers that will point to another part of the file.
Writers use footnotes in term papers for a variety of reasons:
- As signposts to direct the reader to information the writer has provided or where further useful information is pertaining to the topic in the main text.
- To attribute to a quote or viewpoint.
- As an alternative to parenthetical references; it is a simpler way to acknowledge information gained from another source.
- To escape the limitations imposed on the word count of various academic and legal texts which do not take into account footnotes. Aggressive use of this strategy can lead the text to be seen as affected by what some people call "footnote disease".
Things to remember about Footnotes:
- The footnote number (1) is placed at the end of a sentence or quote.
- The footnote number corresponds to the numbered citation at the bottom of the page.
- Footnotes are numbered consecutively from the beginning of a paper.
- Footnotes are listed on the bottom of each page under a solid line.
